Title V: The profession of midwife

Article D4151-1 of the French Public Health Code

The State diploma in midwifery, a national higher education diploma in accordance with the tenth paragraph (9°) of article D. 613-7 of the Education Code, is governed by articles D. 635-1 to D. 635-7 of the same code and by articles R. 4151-9 to R. 4151-13 of this code. Article D4151-10 of the French Public Health Code

The appointment of directors of midwifery schools not covered by Title IV of the General Statute for Civil Servants is subject to their approval by the Director General of the Regional Health Agency. In each school, a doctor, who is the technical director of teaching, is appointed by order of the director general of the regional health agency and the rector of the academic region.

Article D4151-14 of the French Public Health Code

Under the conditions laid down in their code of ethics, midwives who hold the certificate of aptitude for the duties of anaesthetist’s assistant created by the decree of 9 April 1960 creating a certificate of aptitude for the duties of anaesthetist’s assistant or who hold the State diploma of nurse anaesthetist may use the title of State-qualified midwife anaesthetist.

Article D4151-15 of the French Public Health Code

Article D4151-16 of the French Public Health Code

Validation of the work placements is certified by the director of the higher education establishment offering training in midwifery. Article D4151-17 of the French Public Health Code

Student midwives who interrupt their studies may practise the profession of midwife as a replacement if they satisfy the conditions defined in article D. 4151-15. The replacement authorisation is issued for a period not exceeding three months, renewable once under the same conditions. No authorisation may be issued for more than two years from the date of the interruption in studies.
