Article 112 of the French Civil Code

When a person has ceased to appear at his place of domicile or residence without any news of him having been received, the guardianship judge may, at the request of the interested parties or the public prosecutor, establish that there is a presumption of absence.

Lorsqu’une personne a cessé de paraître au lieu de son domicile ou de sa résidence sans que l’on en ait eu de nouvelles, le juge des tutelles peut, à la demande des parties intéressées ou du ministère public, constater qu’il y a présomption d’absence.
