Article 1186 of the French Code of civil procedure

The minor who is capable of forming his or her own views, the parents, the guardian or the person or representative of the service to which the child has been entrusted may choose a counsel or ask the judge for the President of the Bar to appoint one for them ex officio. The appointment must be made within eight days of the request.

The parties concerned are reminded of this right at their first hearing.

Le mineur capable de discernement, les parents, le tuteur ou la personne ou le représentant du service à qui l’enfant a été confié peuvent faire choix d’un conseil ou demander au juge que le bâtonnier leur en désigne un d’office. La désignation doit intervenir dans les huit jours de la demande.

Ce droit est rappelé aux intéressés lors de leur première audition.
