Article 1404 of the French Civil Code

Forming private property by their nature, even if they were acquired during the marriage, are clothing and linen for the personal use of one of the spouses, actions for compensation for bodily or moral injury, non-transferable debts and pensions, and, more generally, all property which is personal in nature and all rights exclusively attached to the person.

Instruments of work necessary for the profession of one of the spouses also form private property by their nature, but subject to reward where applicable, unless they are an accessory to a business or operation forming part of the community.

Forment des propres par leur nature, quand même ils auraient été acquis pendant le mariage, les vêtements et linges à l’usage personnel de l’un des époux, les actions en réparation d’un dommage corporel ou moral, les créances et pensions incessibles, et, plus généralement, tous les biens qui ont un caractère personnel et tous les droits exclusivement attachés à la personne.

Forment aussi des propres par leur nature, mais sauf récompense s’il y a lieu, les instruments de travail nécessaires à la profession de l’un des époux, à moins qu’ils ne soient l’accessoire d’un fonds de commerce ou d’une exploitation faisant partie de la communauté.
