Article 1415 of the French Civil Code

Each of the spouses may only commit his or her own property and income, by a guarantee or loan, unless these have been contracted with the express consent of the other spouse who, in this case, does not commit his or her own property.

Chacun des époux ne peut engager que ses biens propres et ses revenus, par un cautionnement ou un emprunt, à moins que ceux-ci n’aient été contractés avec le consentement exprès de l’autre conjoint qui, dans ce cas, n’engage pas ses biens propres.
