Article 1439 of the French Civil Code

The dowry constituted for the common child, in community property, is borne by the community.

It must be borne half by each spouse, at the dissolution of the community, unless one of them, in constituting it, has expressly declared that he or she will bear it for the whole or for a share greater than half.

La dot constituée à l’enfant commun, en biens de la communauté, est à la charge de celle-ci.

Elle doit être supportée pour moitié par chaque époux, à la dissolution de la communauté, à moins que l’un d’eux, en la constituant, n’ait déclaré expressément qu’il s’en chargerait pour le tout ou pour une part supérieure à la moitié.
