Article 150 of the French Civil Code

If the father and mother are dead, or if they are unable to express their will, the forefathers and foremothers shall replace them; if there is dissension between the forefather and the foremother of the same line, or if there is dissension between the two lines, this division shall entail consent.

If the current residence of the father and mother is unknown and if they have not been heard from for a year, the marriage may be solemnised if the forefathers and foremothers and the child himself make a sworn declaration to this effect. The same applies if one or more of the grandfathers or grandmothers give their consent to the marriage, but the current residence of the other grandfathers or grandmothers is unknown and they have not been heard from for a year.

Si le père et la mère sont morts, ou s’ils sont dans l’impossibilité de manifester leur volonté, les aïeuls et aïeules les remplacent ; s’il y a dissentiment entre l’aïeul et l’aïeule de la même ligne, ou s’il y a dissentiment entre les deux lignes, ce partage emporte consentement.

Si la résidence actuelle des père et mère est inconnue et s’ils n’ont pas donné de leurs nouvelles depuis un an, il pourra être procédé à la célébration du mariage si les aïeuls et aïeules ainsi que l’enfant lui-même en font la déclaration sous serment. Il en est de même si, un ou plusieurs aïeuls ou aïeules donnant leur consentement au mariage, la résidence actuelle des autres aïeuls ou aïeules est inconnue et s’ils n’ont pas donné de leurs nouvelles depuis un an.
