Article 1536 of the French Civil Code

Where the spouses have stipulated in their marriage contract that they will be separated as to property, each of them retains the administration, enjoyment and free disposal of his or her personal property.

Each of them remains solely liable for debts arising in his or her person before or during the marriage, except in the case of article 220.

Lorsque les époux ont stipulé dans leur contrat de mariage qu’ils seraient séparés de biens, chacun d’eux conserve l’administration, la jouissance et la libre disposition de ses biens personnels.

Chacun d’eux reste seul tenu des dettes nées en sa personne avant ou pendant le mariage, hors le cas de l’article 220.
