Article 154 of the French Civil Code

Dissension between father and mother, between grandfather and grandmother of the same line, or between grandfathers of both lines may be ascertained by a notary, requested by the future spouse and acting without the assistance of a second notary or witnesses, who shall notify the proposed union to the father, mother or grandfathers or grandfathers whose consent has not yet been obtained.

The act of notification shall state the forenames, surnames, occupations, domiciles and residences of the future spouses, their fathers and mothers, or, where applicable, their forefathers, as well as the place where the marriage is to be celebrated.

It shall also contain a declaration that this notification is made with a view to obtaining the consent not yet granted and that, failing this, the celebration of the marriage will be disregarded.

Le dissentiment entre le père et la mère, entre l’aïeul et l’aïeule de la même ligne, ou entre aïeuls des deux lignes peut être constaté par un notaire, requis par le futur époux et instrumentant sans le concours d’un deuxième notaire ni de témoins, qui notifiera l’union projetée à celui ou à ceux des père, mère ou aïeuls dont le consentement n’est pas encore obtenu.

L’acte de notification énonce les prénoms, noms, professions, domiciles et résidences des futurs époux, de leurs pères et mères, ou, le cas échéant, de leurs aïeuls, ainsi que le lieu où sera célébré le mariage.

Il contient aussi déclaration que cette notification est faite en vue d’obtenir le consentement non encore accordé et que, à défaut, il sera passé outre à la célébration du mariage.
