Article 1590 of the French Civil Code

If the promise to sell was made with deposits each of the contracting parties is master to dispose of them,

He who gave them, by losing them,

And he who received them, by returning double.

Si la promesse de vendre a été faite avec des arrhes chacun des contractants est maître de s’en départir,

Celui qui les a données, en les perdant,

Et celui qui les a reçues, en restituant le double.
