Article 1734 of the French Civil Code

If there are several tenants, all of them are liable for the fire, in proportion to the rental value of the part of the building they occupy;

Unless they prove that the fire started in the dwelling of one of them, in which case that one alone is liable;

Or that some of them prove that the fire could not have started in their dwelling, in which case those are not liable.

S’il y a plusieurs locataires, tous sont responsables de l’incendie, proportionnellement à la valeur locative de la partie de l’immeuble qu’ils occupent ;

A moins qu’ils ne prouvent que l’incendie a commencé dans l’habitation de l’un d’eux, auquel cas celui-là seul en est tenu ;

Ou que quelques-uns ne prouvent que l’incendie n’a pu commencer chez eux, auquel cas ceux-là n’en sont pas tenus.
