Article 1738 of the French Civil Code

If, on the expiry of the written leases, the lessee remains and is left in possession, a new lease is entered into, the effect of which is governed by the article relating to tenancies entered into without writing.

Si, à l’expiration des baux écrits, le preneur reste et est laissé en possession, il s’opère un nouveau bail dont l’effet est réglé par l’article relatif aux locations faites sans écrit.
