Article 1775 of the French Civil Code

The lease of rural hereditaments although made without writing, shall cease at the expiry of the term fixed by the preceding article, only by the effect of a notice given in writing by one of the parties to the other, at least six months before that term.

If notice is not given within the period specified above, a new lease shall be entered into, the effect of which is governed by article 1774.

The same applies if, on the expiry of written leases, the lessee remains and is left in possession.

Article 1775

Le bail des héritages ruraux quoique fait sans écrit, ne cesse à l’expiration du terme fixé par l’article précédent, que par l’effet d’un congé donné par écrit par l’une des parties à l’autre, six mois au moins avant ce terme.

A défaut d’un congé donné dans le délai ci-dessus spécifié, il s’opère un nouveau bail dont l’effet est réglé par l’article 1774.

Il en est de même si, à l’expiration des baux écrits, le preneur reste et est laissé en possession.
