Article 1798 of the French Civil Code

Bricklayers, carpenters and other workmen who have been employed in the construction of a building or other works made for the company, have no action against the person for whom the works were made, except to the extent of what he is indebted to the contractor for, at the time when their action is brought.

Les maçons, charpentiers et autres ouvriers qui ont été employés à la construction d’un bâtiment ou d’autres ouvrages faits à l’entreprise, n’ont d’action contre celui pour lequel les ouvrages ont été faits, que jusqu’à concurrence de ce dont il se trouve débiteur envers l’entrepreneur, au moment où leur action est intentée.
