Article 1821 of the French Civil Code

This livestock (also called iron livestock) is that by which the owner of a rural holding gives it on farm with the proviso that on expiry of the lease, the farmer will leave the same stock as that which he has received.

Ce cheptel (appelé aussi cheptel de fer) est celui par lequel le propriétaire d’une exploitation rurale la donne à ferme à charge qu’à l’expiration du bail, le fermier laissera un même fonds de bétail que celui qu’il a reçu.
