Article 1919 of the French Civil Code

It is perfected only by the real or fictitious surrender of the thing deposited.

Fictitious surrender is sufficient when the depositary is already endowed, on some other basis, with the thing agreed to be left to him by way of deposit.

Il n’est parfait que par la remise réelle ou fictive de la chose déposée.

La remise fictive suffit quand le dépositaire se trouve déjà nanti, à quelque autre titre, de la chose que l’on consent à lui laisser à titre de dépôt.
