Article 1954 of the French Civil Code

Innbergists or hoteliers shall not be liable for theft or damage that occurs by force majeure, nor for loss that results from the nature or a defect of the thing, provided that they prove the fact that they allege.

As an exception to the provisions of article 1953, innkeepers or hoteliers are liable for objects left in vehicles parked on the premises of which they have private enjoyment up to fifty times the rental price of the accommodation per day.

Articles 1952 and 1953 do not apply to live animals.

Article 1954

Les aubergistes ou hôteliers ne sont pas responsables des vols ou dommages qui arrivent par force majeure, ni de la perte qui résulte de la nature ou d’un vice de la chose, à charge de démontrer le fait qu’ils allèguent.

Par dérogation aux dispositions de l’article 1953, les aubergistes ou hôteliers sont responsables des objets laissés dans les véhicules stationnés sur les lieux dont ils ont la jouissance privative à concurrence de cinquante fois le prix de location du logement par journée.

Les articles 1952 et 1953 ne s’appliquent pas aux animaux vivants.
