Article 208 of the French Civil Code

Alimony shall be granted only in proportion to the need of the person claiming it, and the wealth of the person owing it.

The judge may, even of his own motion, and according to the circumstances of the case, attach to the alimony a variation clause permitted by the laws in force.

Les aliments ne sont accordés que dans la proportion du besoin de celui qui les réclame, et de la fortune de celui qui les doit.

Le juge peut, même d’office, et selon les circonstances de l’espèce, assortir la pension alimentaire d’une clause de variation permise par les lois en vigueur.
