Article 218 of the French Code of civil procedure

The judge conducting the investigation may, of his own motion or at the request of the parties, summon or hear any person whose testimony he deems useful in ascertaining the truth.

Le juge qui procède à l’enquête peut, d’office ou à la demande des parties, convoquer ou entendre toute personne dont l’audition lui paraît utile à la manifestation de la vérité.
