Article 231 of the French Code of civil procedure

The judge may, at the hearing or in his chambers, as well as in any place where an investigative measure is being carried out, hear on the spot any persons whose testimony he deems useful for ascertaining the truth.

Le juge peut, à l’audience ou en son cabinet, ainsi qu’en tout lieu à l’occasion de l’exécution d’une mesure d’instruction, entendre sur-le-champ les personnes dont l’audition lui paraît utile à la manifestation de la vérité.
