Article 258 of the French Code of civil procedure

The judge who prescribes a consultation shall fix either the date of the hearing at which it is to be presented orally or the time limit within which it is to be lodged.

He shall designate the party or parties who will be required to pay the consultant an advance on his remuneration, the amount of which he shall fix.

Le juge qui prescrit une consultation fixe soit la date de l’audience à laquelle elle sera présentée oralement, soit le délai dans lequel elle sera déposée.

Il désigne la ou les parties qui seront tenues de verser, par provision au consultant une avance sur sa rémunération, dont il fixe le montant.
