The witnesses testify separately from each other, in the order established by the president.
The witnesses must, at the request of the president, state their surname, first names, age, profession, domicile or residence, whether they knew the accused before the fact mentioned in the committal order, whether they are related or allied, either to the accused or to the civil party, and to what degree. The president also asked them if they were not attached to the service of either.
Before beginning their testimony, the witnesses took an oath “to speak without hatred or fear, to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth”. Having done so, the witnesses give oral evidence. The president may authorise witnesses to use documents in the course of their testimony.
Witnesses testify only, either as to the facts with which the accused is charged, or as to the accused’s character and character.
Witnesses are not required to state their intimate conviction as to the guilt of the accused.
