Article 503 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

Where the appellant is detained, the appeal may be made by means of a declaration to the head of the prison.

This declaration shall be recorded, dated and signed by the head of the prison. It shall also be signed by the appellant; if the appellant is unable to sign, this shall be noted by the head of the establishment.

The original or a copy of this document shall be sent without delay to the registry of the court which handed down the contested decision; it shall be transcribed into the register provided for in the third paragraph of Article 502 appended to the document drawn up by the registrar.

Article 503

Lorsque l’appelant est détenu, l’appel peut être fait au moyen d’une déclaration auprès du chef de l’établissement pénitentiaire.

Cette déclaration est constatée, datée et signée par le chef de l’établissement pénitentiaire. Elle est également signée par l’appelant ; si celui-ci ne peut signer, il en est fait mention par le chef de l’établissement.

Ce document est adressé sans délai, en original ou en copie, au greffe de la juridiction qui a rendu la décision attaquée ; il est transcrit sur le registre prévu par le troisième alinéa de l’article 502 annexé à l’acte dressé par le greffier.
