Article 551 of the French General Tax Code

Only articles covered with precious metal to a titre of at least 500 thousandths and bearing a special maker’s hallmark are entitled to the designation “plated”, “doubled” or “silver-plated”.

Silver articles of a legal fineness covered with a layer of gold also of a legal fineness equal to or greater than 750 thousandths are alone entitled to the designation Vermeil.

The minimum thickness of the layer of precious metal covering the articles designated in the first and second paragraphs is set by decree.

Infringements of the provisions of this article give rise to the application of the penalties provided for in I of article 1791 and to Article 1794.

Ne peuvent prétendre à l’appellation ” plaqué “, ” doublé ” ou ” métal argenté ” que les ouvrages recouverts de métal précieux à un titre au moins égal à 500 millièmes et revêtus d’un poinçon spécial du fabricant.

Les ouvrages en argent à un titre légal recouverts d’une couche d’or également à un titre légal supérieur ou égal à 750 millièmes ont seuls droit à l’appellation Vermeil.

L’épaisseur minimale de la couche de métal précieux recouvrant les ouvrages désignés aux premier et deuxième alinéas est fixée par décret.

Les infractions aux dispositions du présent article donnent lieu à l’application des sanctions prévues au I de l’article 1791 et à l’article 1794.
