Article 573 of the French Civil Code

Where a thing has been formed by the mixture of several materials belonging to different owners, but none of which can be regarded as the principal material, if the materials can be separated, the one without whose knowledge the materials have been mixed may apply for their division.

If the materials can no longer be separated without inconvenience, they acquire joint ownership in proportion to the quantity, quality and value of the materials belonging to each of them.

Lorsqu’une chose a été formée par le mélange de plusieurs matières appartenant à différents propriétaires, mais dont aucune ne peut être regardée comme la matière principale, si les matières peuvent être séparées, celui à l’insu duquel les matières ont été mélangées peut en demander la division.

Si les matières ne peuvent plus être séparées sans inconvénient, ils en acquièrent en commun la propriété dans la proportion de la quantité, de la qualité et de la valeur des matières appartenant à chacun d’eux.
