Article 577 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

Where the applicant for judicial review is a prisoner, the appeal may be lodged by means of a declaration to the head of the prison.

This declaration is recorded, dated and signed by the head of the prison. It is also signed by the applicant; if the applicant is unable to sign, this is noted by the head of the establishment.

The original or a copy of this document shall be sent without delay to the registry of the court that handed down the contested decision; it shall be transcribed onto the register provided for in the third paragraph of article 576 and appended to the document drawn up by the court clerk.

Article 577

Lorsque le demandeur en cassation est détenu, le pourvoi peut être formé au moyen d’une déclaration auprès du chef de l’établissement pénitentiaire.

Cette déclaration est constatée, datée et signée par le chef de l’établissement pénitentiaire. Elle est également signée par le demandeur ; si celui-ci ne peut signer, il en est fait mention par le chef de l’établissement.

Ce document est adressé sans délai, en original ou en copie, au greffe de la juridiction qui a rendu la décision attaquée ; il est transcrit sur le registre prévu par le troisième alinéa de l’article 576 et annexé à l’acte dressé par le greffier.
