Each of the future spouses shall provide the civil registrar who is to celebrate the marriage with an extract from his or her birth record, indicating filiation, which must not be more than three months old if it was issued by a French civil registrar.
However, the civil registrar may, after having informed the future spouse in advance, request verification of the personal data contained in the civil records from the custodian of the future spouse’s birth record. Where the birth record is not held by a French civil registrar, the extract from this record must not be more than six months old. This time limit condition does not apply when the record comes from a foreign civil status system that does not update records.
