Article 706-116 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

The person being prosecuted must be assisted by a lawyer.

If the person being prosecuted or his curator or guardian fails to choose a lawyer, the public prosecutor or examining magistrate shall have a lawyer appointed by the President of the Bar, the person concerned being informed that the costs will be borne by him unless he meets the conditions for access to legal aid.

La personne poursuivie doit être assistée par un avocat.

A défaut de choix d’un avocat par la personne poursuivie ou son curateur ou son tuteur, le procureur de la République ou le juge d’instruction fait désigner par le bâtonnier un avocat, l’intéressé étant informé que les frais seront à sa charge sauf s’il remplit les conditions d’accès à l’aide juridictionnelle.
