Article 82 of the French Civil Code

The police officer will be required to forward immediately to the registrar of the place where the person died, all the information set out in his report, on the basis of which the death certificate will be drawn up.

The registrar will send a copy to the registrar of the domicile of the deceased person, if known: this copy will be entered in the registers.

Article 82

L’officier de police sera tenu de transmettre de suite à l’officier de l’état civil du lieu où la personne sera décédée, tous les renseignements énoncés dans son procès-verbal, d’après lesquels l’acte de décès sera rédigé.

L’officier de l’état civil en enverra une expédition à celui du domicile de la personne décédée, s’il est connu : cette expédition sera inscrite sur les registres.
