Article 980 of the French Civil Code

Witnesses called to be present at wills must understand the French language and be of age, be able to sign and have the enjoyment of their civil rights. They may be of either sex, but husband and wife may not be witnesses to the same act.

Les témoins appelés pour être présents aux testaments devront comprendre la langue française et être majeurs, savoir signer et avoir la jouissance de leurs droits civils. Ils pourront être de l’un ou de l’autre sexe, mais le mari et la femme ne pourront être témoins dans le même acte.
