Article ANNEXE, art. 12 of the French Code of civil procedure

Civil registrars are required to notify the tribunal d’instance:

– of the death of any person leaving one or more minor children;

– of the death of a person leaving among their heirs, protected adults or absent persons.

Les officiers de l’état civil sont tenus d’aviser le tribunal d’instance :

– du décès de toute personne laissant un ou plusieurs enfants mineurs ;

– du décès d’une personne laissant parmi ses héritiers, des majeurs protégés ou des absents.
