Article D121-2 of the French Monetary and Financial Code

The Monnaie de Paris and the Banque de France, acting on behalf of the French Treasury, are authorised to take back from their holders, for their face value and after verification of their authenticity, damaged coins issued by the State and having legal tender status.

In the case of bi-metallic coins, reimbursement is only made on presentation of a minimum residual consisting of the central part.

La Monnaie de Paris et la Banque de France, agissant pour le compte du Trésor public, sont autorisées à reprendre à leurs détenteurs, pour leur valeur nominale et après vérification de leur authenticité, les pièces de monnaies détériorées émises par l’Etat et ayant cours légal.

Pour ce qui concerne les pièces bimétalliques, le remboursement n’est effectué que sur présentation d’un minimum résiduel constitué de la partie centrale.
