I.-The missions of the national centres of reference are :
1° Expertise in the microbiology and pathology of infectious agents, the development, optimisation, validation and distribution of medical biology tests; the identification and confirmation of pathogenic agents, in particular those for which there is no in vitro diagnostic medical device meeting the conditions set out inarticle L. 5221-3 of the Public Health Code;
2° Providing scientific or technical advice in response to any request from the Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Agency, regional health agencies and health professionals;
3° Contributing to epidemiological surveillance:
a) By carrying out the analyses required to monitor pathogens;
b) By setting up and running a network of laboratories carrying out analyses, which then transmit the results and, where appropriate, samples at the request of the national reference centre.
4° Immediately alerting the National Public Health Agency, the Ministry of Health and, where appropriate, the Regional Health Agency of any phenomenon that may pose a risk to public health.
II – In order to carry out all the tasks mentioned in I, a national reference centre, which is the coordinating laboratory, may join forces with a maximum of three laboratories known as “National Reference Centres-Associated Laboratories”.
III – Laboratories carrying out only the tasks mentioned in 1° and 2° of I are called “National Reference Centres – Expert Laboratories”.
