Volunteers, trained in end-of-life care and belonging to associations that select them, may, with the agreement of the patient or their relatives and without interfering with medical and paramedical care, assist the care team by taking part in the patient’s final care and by supporting the psychological and social environment of the patient and their relatives.
Associations that organise the work of volunteers draw up a charter defining the principles they must respect in their work. These principles include respect for the philosophical and religious opinions of the person being cared for, respect for their dignity and privacy, discretion, confidentiality and non-interference in care.
Associations that organise the work of volunteers in public or private health establishments and social and medico-social establishments must enter into an agreement with the establishments concerned that complies with a standard agreement defined by decree by the Conseil d’Etat. In the absence of such an agreement, or where it is established that the provisions of the agreement are not being complied with, the director of the establishment, or failing this the director general of the regional health agency, will prohibit members of the association from entering the establishment.
Only associations that have signed the agreement referred to in the previous paragraph may organise the work of volunteers in the homes of patients.
