The procedures referred to in Article L. 1110-5 must not be carried out or continued if they result from unreasonable obstinacy. Where they appear unnecessary or disproportionate, or where they have no effect other than the artificial maintenance of life, they may be suspended or not undertaken, in accordance with the patient’s wishes and, if the patient is incapable of expressing his or her wishes, at the end of a collegiate procedure defined by regulation.
Artificial nutrition and hydration constitute treatments that may be stopped in accordance with the first paragraph of this article.
When the procedures mentioned in the first two paragraphs of this article are suspended or not undertaken, the doctor shall safeguard the dignity of the dying person and ensure the quality of his/her life by providing the palliative care mentioned in article L. 1110-10.
