The genetic counsellor, under the responsibility of a doctor qualified in genetics, participates within a multidisciplinary team :
1° Providing information and advice to persons and their families who may be or have been the subject of an examination of genetic characteristics for medical purposes as defined in Article L. 1131-1, or an analysis for the purposes of prenatal diagnosis as defined in Article L. 2131-1;

The genetic counsellor may prescribe certain medical biology examinations covered by this Title and Chapter I of Title III of Book I of Part Two of this Code, the results of which are communicated to the person concerned by a doctor under whose responsibility the genetic counsellor acts, under conditions specified by a decree of the Conseil d’Etat issued after consultation with the Académie nationale de médecine. This decree also specifies the conditions under which the genetic counsellor may communicate the results to the person concerned, in agreement with the doctor under whose responsibility he or she acts.
The profession of genetic counsellor is practised in public and private health establishments authorised to carry out examinations of genetic characteristics for medical purposes or prenatal diagnosis activities, as well as in multidisciplinary prenatal diagnosis centres.
