Article L122-1 of the French Monetary and Financial Code

Legal tender banknotes are issued in accordance with Article L. 141-5.

The legal tender status of a given type of banknote denominated in francs may be withdrawn by decree on a proposal from the Banque de France. The Bank remains obliged to exchange these notes at its counters for other types of legal tender notes within a period of ten years.

The provisions relating to lost or stolen bearer securities do not apply to legal tender notes.

Les billets ayant cours légal sont émis dans les conditions prévues à l’article L. 141-5.

Le cours légal d’un type déterminé de billets libellés en francs peut, sur proposition de la Banque de France, être supprimé par décret. La Banque reste tenue d’en assurer dans un délai de dix ans l’échange à ses guichets contre d’autres types de billets ayant cours légal.

Les dispositions relatives aux titres au porteur perdus ou volés ne sont pas applicables aux billets ayant cours légal.
