Article L1225-24 of the French Labour Code

Maternity leave results in the suspension of the employment contract. The employee shall notify the employer of the reason for her absence and the date on which she intends to end it.

The duration of this leave is treated as a period of actual work for the purposes of determining the employee’s seniority rights.

Le congé de maternité entraîne la suspension du contrat de travail. La salariée avertit l’employeur du motif de son absence et de la date à laquelle elle entend y mettre fin.

La durée de ce congé est assimilée à une période de travail effectif pour la détermination des droits que la salariée tient de son ancienneté.
