Article L1616-1 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

The communes, départements and regions must devote 1% of the amount of the investment to the insertion of works of art in all buildings that were subject, on 23 July 1983, the date of publication of law no. 83-663 of 22 July 1983 supplementing law no. 83-8 of 7 January 1983 relating to the division of powers between communes, départements, regions and the State, to the same obligation on the part of the State.

As soon as the project manager for a construction mentioned in the first paragraph of this article has been chosen, the municipality, department or region shall immediately select the author of the work of art to be inserted into the said construction.

The municipalities, departments and regions shall ensure the diversity of the works and artists selected in application of this article.

Article L1616-1

Les communes, les départements et les régions doivent consacrer 1 % du montant de l’investissement à l’insertion d’oeuvres d’art dans toutes les constructions qui faisaient l’objet, au 23 juillet 1983, date de publication de la loi n° 83-663 du 22 juillet 1983 complétant la loi n° 83-8 du 7 janvier 1983 relative à la répartition de compétences entre les communes, les départements, les régions et l’Etat, de la même obligation à la charge de l’Etat.

Dès que le maître d’œuvre d’une construction mentionnée au premier alinéa du présent article est choisi, la commune, le département ou la région sélectionne sans délai l’auteur de l’œuvre d’art faisant l’objet d’une insertion dans ladite construction.

Les communes, les départements et les régions veillent à la diversité des œuvres et des artistes sélectionnés en application du présent article.
