Article L2122-34-1 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

After the general renewal of the municipal councils, the representative of the State in the department and the public prosecutor(s) with territorial jurisdiction receive the mayors of the department in order to present to them the attributions that the latter exercise on behalf of the State and as judicial police and civil status officers.

From the date of their appointment, mayors and deputy mayors are issued with a tricolour identity card certifying their functions.

Après le renouvellement général des conseils municipaux, le représentant de l’Etat dans le département et le ou les procureurs de la République territorialement compétents reçoivent les maires du département afin de leur présenter les attributions que ces derniers exercent au nom de l’Etat et comme officiers de police judiciaire et de l’état civil.


A compter de leur désignation, les maires et les adjoints sont destinataires d’une carte d’identité tricolore attestant de leurs fonctions.
