Honorary status is conferred by the State representative in the department on former mayors, deputy mayors and deputy mayors who have held municipal office for at least eighteen years. Municipal terms of office which, as a result of legislative provisions, have lasted less than six years are counted as six years, provided that they have lasted more than five years.
Honorary office may only be refused or withdrawn by the representative of the State in the department if the person concerned has been convicted of an offence entailing ineligibility.
Honorary office for mayors, deputy mayors and deputy mayors is not accompanied by any financial benefit chargeable to the municipal budget.
