In municipalities with a population of 1,000 or more, deputy councillors are elected by an absolute majority of the votes cast, without any combination of votes or preferential votes. The list is composed alternately of one candidate of each sex.
If, after two ballots, no list has obtained an absolute majority, a third ballot is held and the election takes place by relative majority. In the event of a tie, the candidates on the list with the highest average age are elected.
If only one deputy is elected, he or she is elected in accordance with the rules set out in article L. 2122-7.
When it is necessary, in the event of a vacancy, to appoint one or more deputies, they are chosen from among the councillors of the same sex as those they are to succeed. The Town Council may decide that, in the order of the table, they will occupy the same rank as the elected members who previously occupied the posts that have become vacant.
