Article L2223-27 of the French General Code of Local Authorities

The service is free for people without sufficient resources.

When the public service mission defined in article L. 2223-19 is not provided by the commune, the commune shall pay the funeral expenses of these persons. It chooses the organisation that will provide the funeral services. The mayor shall arrange for the body to be cremated if the deceased has expressed this wish.

Le service est gratuit pour les personnes dépourvues de ressources suffisantes.

Lorsque la mission de service public définie à l’article L. 2223-19 n’est pas assurée par la commune, celle-ci prend en charge les frais d’obsèques de ces personnes. Elle choisit l’organisme qui assurera ces obsèques. Le maire fait procéder à la crémation du corps lorsque le défunt en a exprimé la volonté.
