Article L411-2 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

On expiry of the period of validity of their residence document, foreign nationals must leave France, unless they obtain a renewal or are issued with another.
In the event of refusal to issue or renew any residence permit or provisional residence authorisation, foreign nationals are required to leave the territory.
The same applies in the event of withdrawal of the residence permit or provisional residence authorisation they hold.

A l’expiration de la durée de validité de son document de séjour, l’étranger doit quitter la France, à moins qu’il n’en obtienne le renouvellement ou qu’il ne lui en soit délivré un autre.
En cas de refus de délivrance ou de renouvellement de tout titre de séjour ou autorisation provisoire de séjour, l’étranger est tenu de quitter le territoire.
Il en va de même en cas de retrait du titre de séjour ou autorisation provisoire de séjour dont il est titulaire.
