Article L612-11 of the French Code governing the entry and residence of foreign nationals and the right of asylum

The administrative authority may extend the prohibition on return for a maximum period of two years in the following cases:
1° The foreign national has remained illegally on French territory when he/she was obliged to leave it without delay;
2° The foreign national has remained illegally on French territory beyond the deadline for voluntary departure that had been granted to him/her;
3° The foreign national has returned to French territory after having complied with the obligation to leave French territory, while the prohibition on return was still in effect.

Article L612-11

L’autorité administrative peut prolonger l’interdiction de retour pour une durée maximale de deux ans dans les cas suivants :
1° L’étranger s’est maintenu irrégulièrement sur le territoire français alors qu’il était obligé de le quitter sans délai ;
2° L’étranger s’est maintenu irrégulièrement sur le territoire français au-delà du délai de départ volontaire qui lui avait été accordé ;
3° L’étranger est revenu sur le territoire français après avoir déféré à l’obligation de quitter le territoire français, alors que l’interdiction de retour poursuivait ses effets.
Compte tenu des prolongations éventuellement décidées, la durée totale de l’interdiction de retour ne peut excéder cinq ans à compter de l’exécution de l’obligation de quitter le territoire français, sauf menace grave pour l’ordre public.
