Article L613-31 of the French Intellectual Property Code

The co-owner of a patent application or patent may notify the other co-owners that he is surrendering his share to them. With effect from the entry of such abandonment in the National Patent Register or, in the case of a patent application which has not yet been published, with effect from its notification to the National Institute of Industrial Property, the said co-owner shall be discharged from all obligations towards the other co-owners; the latter shall share the abandoned share in proportion to their rights in the co-ownership, unless otherwise agreed.

Le copropriétaire d’une demande de brevet ou d’un brevet peut notifier aux autres copropriétaires qu’il abandonne à leur profit sa quote-part. A compter de l’inscription de cet abandon au Registre national des brevets ou, lorsqu’il s’agit d’une demande de brevet non encore publiée, à compter de sa notification à l’Institut national de la propriété industrielle, ledit copropriétaire est déchargé de toutes obligations à l’égard des autres copropriétaires ; ceux-ci se répartissent la quote-part abandonnée à proportion de leurs droits dans la copropriété, sauf convention contraire.
