Article L6145-12 of the French Public Health Code

Household effects brought by persons who have died in public health establishments after having been treated there free of charge, belong to the said public health establishments to the exclusion of the heirs and the estate in the event of disinheritance.

The heirs and legatees of persons whose treatment and maintenance have been paid for in any way whatsoever may exercise their rights over all effects brought into public health establishments by the said sick or able-bodied persons; in the event of escheatment, the same effects belong to the public health establishments.

Les effets mobiliers, apportés par les personnes décédées dans les établissements publics de santé après y avoir été traitées gratuitement, appartiennent auxdits établissements publics de santé à l’exclusion des héritiers et du domaine en cas de déshérence.

Les héritiers et légataires des personnes dont le traitement et l’entretien ont été acquittés de quelque manière que ce soit peuvent exercer leurs droits sur tous les effets apportés dans les établissements publics de santé par lesdites personnes malades ou valides ; dans le cas de déshérence, les mêmes effets appartiennent aux établissements publics de santé.
