Article R1112-69 of the French Public Health Code

The family or next of kin are informed as soon as possible and by all appropriate means of the worsening of the patient’s condition and of his death.

Death is confirmed by any means.

Notification of death is given to :

1° Foreign nationals whose family does not reside in France, to the nearest consulate;

2° Military personnel, to the competent military authority;

3° Minors covered by a departmental child welfare service, to the president of the departmental council.

For minors covered by provisions relating to the protection of children and adolescents at risk, to the director of the establishment to which the minor is attached or to the person with whom the minor usually resides.

La famille ou les proches sont prévenus dès que possible et par tous moyens appropriés de l’aggravation de l’état du malade et du décès de celui-ci.

Le décès est confirmé par tout moyen.

La notification du décès est faite pour :

1° Les étrangers dont la famille ne réside pas en France, au consulat le plus proche ;

2° Les militaires, à l’autorité militaire compétente ;

3° Les mineurs relevant d’un service départemental d’aide sociale à l’enfance, au président du conseil départemental.

Pour les mineurs relevant des dispositions relatives à la protection de l’enfance et de l’adolescence en danger, au directeur de l’établissement dont relève le mineur ou à la personne chez laquelle le mineur a son domicile habituel.
