Article R148 of the French Code of Criminal Procedure

Animals and all perishable objects, for whatever cause they are seized, may not remain in the pound or under sequestration for more than eight days.

After this period, provisional release must, in principle, be granted.

If they must or cannot be returned, they shall be put up for sale, and the pound fees shall be taken from the proceeds of the sale by lien and in preference to all others.

Les animaux et tous les objets périssables, pour quelque cause qu’ils soient saisis, ne peuvent rester en fourrière ou sous le séquestre plus de huit jours.

Après ce délai, la mainlevée provisoire doit, en principe, être accordée.

S’ils ne doivent ou ne peuvent être restitués, ils sont mis en vente, et les frais de fourrière sont prélevés sur le produit de la vente par privilège et de préférence à tous autres.
