Article R4216-11 of the French Labour Code

The maximum distance to be covered to reach a staircase on an upper floor or in a basement is never more than forty metres.
A staircase leading to the ground floor must be less than twenty metres from an exit to the outside.
The escape routes do not include a dead end of more than ten metres.

La distance maximale à parcourir pour gagner un escalier en étage ou en sous-sol n’est jamais supérieure à quarante mètres.
Le débouché au niveau du rez-de-chaussée d’un escalier s’effectue à moins de vingt mètres d’une sortie sur l’extérieur.
Les itinéraires de dégagements ne comportent pas de cul-de-sac supérieur à dix mètres.
